India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology released its national AI policy framework today, a document that’s been in draft for over a year.
The headline: AI systems used in healthcare, education, and financial services will require mandatory audits before deployment. Startups with under ₹10 crore in annual revenue are exempt for the first two years.
For creators, the more immediate change is around synthetic media. Any AI-generated video or audio used in news or public information contexts must carry a visible disclosure label. Platforms that don’t enforce this face fines starting at ₹50 lakh.
The grey area nobody is talking about is the definition of “public information context.” The policy doesn’t clearly separate journalism from entertainment, which means a tech creator doing an explainer video could theoretically fall under the same rules as a news network.
Enforcement begins 90 days from today. The ministry has not yet named the auditing bodies.
